3 Destinations I Would Go Back To In A Heartbeat

By on January 17, 2015

The question travellers always get asked…

So, to my fellow travellers out there, what is the one question you always get asked when you return home?

I think it’s safe to say that the one question on everyone’s minds is…

“What was your favourite country/place/destination?”

I got asked this many times after I returned home from my big 4.5 month world trip. So, I thought it was about time to answer this question and share with you just three of my most favourite places in the world that I would return to in a heartbeat! Over the next couple of weeks I am writing a three-part series highlighting each destination in a little bit of detail and in addition, showing some beautiful photos to inspire you to make it your next travel destination!

3 Destinations I Would Go Back To In A Heartbeat

1.

SANTORINI, GREECE

Why I love Santorini

Santorini is by far one of the most popular islands in Greece, and when I first visited in 2014, I instantly fell in love!

These are a few reasons why I loved Santorini:

1. Stunning views of the Caldera in Oia: Check out my photos of one of the most stunning sunsets in the world here

2. Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants was filmed there: Since I’m a girl who is a sucker for those kinds of movies, I definitely felt like I was re-living it just a little, when I had my very first donkey riding experience!

3. Romance: Santorini, with its stunning views of the caldera just screams romance! While walking through Oia I saw a beautiful wedding take place, and Santorini is also a popular tourist destination for popping the question!

2.

New Orleans, USA

Why I love New Orleans

New Orleans has become one of my most favourite destinations in USA for these few reasons:

1. New Orleans is famous for their jazz, big band and blues music so for a musician like me it was musician heaven! During the day there are musicians playing on the street and every night the bars are filled with live jazz, big band and blues music! This is why I truly fell in love with this US city!

2. Atmosphere: The jazz, big band and blues music culture in New Orleans creates this awesome atmosphere. It is there all the time both day and night! New Orleans is continually filled with authenticity and creativity in music, combined with passion, love and adoration for the life that music brings! This is why next time I really need to spend a week exploring New Orleans!

3. Food: In New Orleans I devoured the most tasty French doughnut called a Beignet. It is literally the most mouth watering and delicious pastry I have ever eaten!

3.

Salzburg, Austria

Why I love Salzburg

1. The Sound of Music (1965) movie was filmed in Salzburg, and if you are a hardcore fan like I am, you can treat yourself to a Sound of Music Tour which visits key locations from the movie.

2. The sights: Salzburg has some of the most beautiful and stunning sights and attractions, from the great composer Mozart, unique architecture and the breathtaking views of the city! There is definitely no shortage of sights to see in Salzburg!

3. The views: With no shortage of sights and attractions in Salzburg, there are plenty of them that involve climbing up stairs or taking an elevator to show off the amazing views of the city! All of this and more can be explored through using the Salzburg card!

Hi Carlotta, Greece by far is my favourite country! Make it a priority on the travel to-do list, you will not be disappointed! The Greek Islands are so beautiful! It was exactly like the images on the postcards! I also have a Greek background so that’s probably why I fell in love with the place 🙂 Stayed tuned for my posts about Santorini over the next couple of days! I published the first one today about riding a donkey in Santorini!

Hi Bec. Would love any Santorini tips you have to offer! I was looking at travelling there this summer but it seems so expensive! x

      Hi Victoria!

Santorini is definitely expensive during the Summer months! I know of quite a few Greek residents who spend the Summer in the islands and once Winter rolls around, they return back to the mainland, so Summer is the only option for tourists! A few tips I can offer you are:

      1. Staying in Oia is super expensive (especially if travelling solo) due to the location (literally screams romance and couples!), so staying outside of the city of Oia is a good idea. Find a city/suburb/town nearby and catch public transport into Oia for the beautiful sunset! On the tour I was on, we stayed in the Olympia Hotel in Fira which is 20mins from Oia, but I would suggest finding somewhere closer as the walk from the hotel to the bus stop was pretty far. With our tour we paid for an included optional which was a full day Santorini tour, so the bus drove us into Oia instead of us catching public transport.

      2. Go on a tour: This is way more cost effective than booking a trip around the Greek islands by yourself and it is also a great way to be introduced to Greece and the Greek Islands if you have never been before. I went on the Greek Island Hopper with Topdeck Travel (young people tour company) for 10 days, and we started in Athens, then went to Mykonos, Paros (highly recommend you visit this island – less tourists, cheaper and good shopping!), Santorini, then back to Athens. It includes a sunset dinner in Santorini (looking out over the caldera), walking tours in those islands, plus your ferry tickets and transfers! It only cost me about $1700 AUD for the tour! It was well worth it and I highly recommend it!

      3. Airbnb: Website where people offer to rent out their apartment or spare rooms for short/long stays from places all over the world. Highly recommend this website for any accommodation bookings! I saved a lot of money! There are plenty of places to stay not far from Oia at a good price, so feel free to do a google search and go with airbnb.

      4. Go with a friend: I am planning a trip back to Greece later this year with a friend, so we are going to splurge a little and go halves in a nice Airbnb place in Oia (hopefully!), so travelling with others will definitely cut down your costs!

      5. Just a getting there tip: If you only want to go to Santorini and no other islands (due to preference or you have limited time), then just book a flight from Athens to Santorini. I recommend going with Olympic Air, they have pretty decent prices on flights. Otherwise the ferry from Athens to Santorini is 8 hours! (but will cost much less than a flight).

Please let me know if you have any other questions! You can always message me on Facebook and we can talk more about your trip! I hope you find these tips helpful!
