One of my favourite attractions in Salzburg
One of my favourite attractions is the famous Hellbrunn Palace and Trick Fountains! The Hellbrunn trick fountains (also known as Wasserspiele in German) have been the main attraction at Hellbrunn Palace for almost 400 years.
It was the keen sense of humour by Markus Sittikus who had the bright idea of designing a series of “water games” in order to play a few practical jokes on his dinner guests. In Salzburg, you can take a tour of the famous trick fountains and you WILL GET WET! You may not get completely soaked, but you will experience a slight sprinkle (that x10) of water, and you WILL GET TRICKED!
4 Amazing Trick Fountains at Hellbrunn Palace
1. The Dinner Table
The outside dinner table at Hellbrunn Palace was designed for very distinguished guests visiting the Archbishop at the palace during the Summer months. Markus Sittikus in all his glory and with his admirable sense of humour designed each chair at the table (except his own chair) with a trick fountain installed where your bottom sits!
In those days, when you were in the company of someone as important as the Archbishop it was seen as very impolite to stand unless he was standing; when the Archbishop pulled the trick on his dinner guests, they were unable to stand up and move away from the water, in fear of being impolite. Instead, they received a very cold shower from the bottom up! If you go on the Hellbrunn Trick Fountains tour, you may also get wet if you volunteer yourself to sit at the dinner table, just like these travellers did!
Here is a quick video for your amusement of some travellers getting tricked! (this is not my own video)
2. Neptune’s Grotto
There are three things I loved about Neptune’s Grotto at the Hellbrunn Palace and Trick Fountains:
1. The outside
The views of the outside combining the architecture and the fountains are beautiful!
2. The inside
Inside Neptune’s Grotto you can find a weird and creepy gremlin looking face with a red tongue, which is one of the featured fountains inside.
3. The outside Trick Fountain
After exploring the outside and inside of Neptune’s Grotto without getting wet, I was starting to wonder why; beware once you walk outside because there will be a few more trick fountains! I definitely got wet by this one! If you look closely you can see water coming out of the moose’s antlers.
The other trick fountain is directly where you walk out of Neptune’s Grotto, here is a quick video I took!
3. The Mechanical Theatre
The Mechanical Theatre is one of the highlights on the Hellbrunn Trick Fountain’s tour. The design for the Mechnical Theatre was inspired by a Baroque city, and on your tour of the trick fountains, your guide will show you the water organ, which powers 200 figures in the theatre!
Beware: You may just get yourself wet! (again)
Here is a quick video I shot of the theatre and the trick fountain!
4. The Crown
The crown fountain is also another highlight of the tour! The crown is a symbol of political power and of money. This is by far one of the coolest fountains to see on the tour!
The crown reaches right up to the top! Here is a quick video I shot of the crown!
Beware: When you walk out of this miniature cave, there may be another surprise waiting for you!
